In 2022 we implemented a new scheme for the transports of export containers by barge to the port of Antwerp. The initiative reduces road transport to the port by 72%, which is a saving of 56,000 road kilometres every year.

This project brings us a step closer to reducing the carbon footprint of our products. By using the barge, 62 tonnes less CO₂ will be emitted per year, which is the equivalent of the emissions of 16 Flemish households.

To implement the scheme, we teamed up with the Hutchison terminal (TCT) in Willebroek. Empty 20ft containers are picked up at the terminal for loading our products in Duffel. The containers are subsequently returned to TCT and loaded on the barge for transport to the port. "Aluminium Duffel is very aware of the social impact of its transport, both in terms of traffic jams around Antwerp and CO₂ emissions," says Brahim El Boussatati, Shipping & Warehousing Manager. "This project has resulted in a significant reduction of the number of road kilometres. This is better for the environment and local traffic. The transport initiative is a great example of a sustainable solution that adds value to our products and has a positive impact on the community."
