Good mentors, attention to safety and learning, and impressive installations: these are the things that make Aluminium Duffel a great place to be a trainee.

Sean (trainee)

Who

Sean is a student from Leuven.

Training

He took a graduate course in electromechanical systems. The two-year course also includes workplace learning, and he completed this at Aluminium Duffel.

The job

Sean: "During the first year of workplace learning, I was introduced to different installations in different departments. In the second year of workplace learning, I got to work more on my own. I controlled machines and parts, and I could ask more specific questions. That gave me new insights: "Aha, that's how this works!" In the final period, I worked in shifts so I could try everything. I discussed my experience at Aluminium Duffel with a fellow student, and he was so impressed that he decided to join me."

Why I chose Aluminium Duffel

Sean: "In the first year of the course, the subject Sector and Professional Exploration introduced us to the different industries where maintenance technicians are employed. I find aluminium a very interesting material, and I was immediately interested in Aluminium Duffel.

Culture

Sean: "I’m very satisfied with the guidance provided by my mentors. They welcomed a student’s interest and curiosity and wanted to make time for us. I could ask all the questions I wanted, and I was allowed to speak to many of the employees. Especially in the second year, they made me feel that I was really contributing to the work. But they never had unrealistic expectations, and more time was allowed for complex tasks if necessary. The workload is also well-balanced: some days are strenuous but others more relaxed. Fortunately, there are beverage machines around every corner which are ideal for a quick cup of tea and then back to work (laughs).

Value – People & Power

Sean: "At Aluminium Duffel, you know that safety is the number one priority. I never had to do anything that was too difficult for me, and certainly nothing that was unsafe. For example, clear safety instructions were given for every preventive maintenance, with pictures and info, divided into steps. Every safety aspect was carefully prepared – literally from head to toe."
